Best Time to Trek Mount Toubkal
Spring and autumn are the sweet spots, but Toubkal can be climbed all year. Here is what each season really feels like on the mountain.
If you only want the short answer: late April to early June and mid-September to October give the best mix of settled weather, comfortable temperatures and clear summit views. But the "best" month depends on what you want, so here is the full picture.
The 30-second version
Best overall: May, June, late September, October.
Quietest and coolest in Marrakech: Winter, with snow on the mountain and a more serious trek.
Hottest valley, nicest mountain air: July and August.
Why timing matters on Toubkal
The summit is 4,167m. That is high enough that the weather up there can be very different from Marrakech, which sits at around 466m. You may leave a 35°C city in the morning and be putting on a down jacket at the refuge that same evening. Timing affects three things: snow and ice on the final slopes, how hot the approach feels, and how busy the refuge is.
Season by season
Spring
Valleys are green, streams are running and the walnut and almond country around Imlil looks its best. Lower snow melts out through the season, though patches can linger higher up in April.
Summer
Marrakech is very hot, but the mountain is pleasantly cool at altitude. Trails are dry and snow-free. Start early: afternoon heat on the lower sections is real, and occasional afternoon storms can build over the peaks.
Autumn
Heat eases, the light turns golden and conditions are usually stable and dry. Many guides consider this the most reliable window for clear summit views.
Winter
Snow and ice cover the upper mountain. It is beautiful, but it becomes a winter mountaineering day: crampons and an ice axe are normally needed, the refuge is very cold, and weather can force a change of plan. Best for people with winter hill experience.
Month-by-month at a glance
| Month | Summit conditions | Crowds | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| January – February | Snow and ice, winter kit required | Very quiet | Short days, cold nights |
| March | Still snowy, improving late month | Quiet | Variable weather |
| April | Some snow remaining high up | Moderate to busy | Easter holidays are popular |
| May – June | Mostly clear, comfortable | Busy | Book ahead for weekends |
| July – August | Dry, clear, cooler at altitude | Moderate | Hot valley, start before dawn |
| September – October | Dry and stable | Busy | Great light for photos |
| November – December | Snow arrives, conditions vary | Quiet | Check conditions before booking |
These are typical patterns, not guarantees. Mountain weather changes year to year, which is one reason a local guide checking conditions on the day matters.
A note on Ramadan
Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year, and it can fall during trekking season. You can still trek, and many visitors do, but the experience changes: some local services run on reduced hours and your team may be fasting during long walking days. If your dates overlap, tell Rdouane when you book so the pace and logistics can be planned sensibly.
Which route suits which season?
- Spring and autumn: any of the four routes work well. The 4-day trek with its acclimatisation hike is the most comfortable choice for first-timers.
- Summer: choose a route with an early start, and consider the 5-day scenic route for the cooler village and refuge stretches.
- Winter: allow extra days. A longer route gives you buffer if weather closes the summit window. Talk to Rdouane first, as winter conditions change what is realistic.
What about altitude, whatever the season?
Altitude is the same in July as in January. Spending time above 3,000m before summit day makes the biggest difference to how you feel, which is why we recommend 3 or 4 days where you can. Our altitude and acclimatisation section explains the details.
How far ahead should you book?
For May, June, September and October, book several weeks ahead, particularly if you want a weekend start. Winter and midsummer are more flexible. You can see open dates on the availability calendar or just message Rdouane on WhatsApp.
Frequently asked questions
Can you climb Toubkal in winter?
Yes, but it is a different undertaking. With snow and ice you will need winter equipment and a guide who reads conditions well. Ask before booking.
Is Toubkal too hot in summer?
The valley and Marrakech are hot, but the mountain itself is comfortable at altitude. The key is starting early so you finish the exposed lower sections before the midday heat.
When is Toubkal least crowded?
Winter and midsummer weekdays are the quietest. Weekends in May, June and October are the busiest.
What is the single best month?
If forced to choose: late May or early October. Stable weather, no snow on the trail and comfortable temperatures.
